Newbie questions

Postby Brandon Johnson » Wed Aug 19, 2009 12:15 pm

My 5yr and I are interested in Karting. I have been to the track and meet many wonder people (thanks to everyone). So I am wondering what is the recommended stuff needed to get started (i.g. clothes, spare parts, etc)
What is the minimum needed?
Where is a good place to go to price stuff out?
I am watching the classifieds now looking for a kart.

Thanks,
Brandon Johnson

Brandon,
I think you are headed down the right path by coming to the track and meeting the club members. Get advice from many and make your decision on what you feel will work best for your budget and goals.
Not knowing what your skills or experience are I would say finding karts in race ready condition is a high priority. If these karts come from either local shop or club member then you should be able to get some basic tuning advice/help as well. When you find a kart (especially from someone that you will not see at the track regularly) then have someone check it out for/with you. Have it tech’d, even if you are not yet racing it should have the same safety standard.
I will start a list here and everyone who reads this may remember something I have forgotten...

You will need:
NTK rules book
NTK membership
2008 KART manual
Driver suits (or jackets)
Current certified helmets that fit (see rules)
Gloves
Neck brace
Fuel container & mixer (if two stroke)

You will want:
Rib vest/chest protector
Rolling stand
Data device (Mychron is most popular)
a stopwatch
Some coaching
Some shade

Hope to see you on the new track soon!
