Chonda Lap Time??
by Randy Voorhies » Tue Mar 15, 2011 9:41 pm
My 12 year old son is new to karting and is just starting to make some practice laps in his chonda; what is a good lap time?
Before he makes his first race, how fast should he be?
Thanks for the help!

Hello Randy,
Good to hear you guys are joining the ranks of the chonda class!
Regarding your question, I have no idea!
, but I can give you some pointers while some of the Junior Chondas correct me.
I am a 35 year old in the 385 Class, during one of last season races I was having problems with my carburator ( for real, not an excuse
) and I was "fighting" for position with a couple junior chondas. If I remember correctly, our times that day were in the 52's so I would say that somewhere in between the 52 and 55 will be good.
Taking the times for Spring 1 (unfortunately I don't see any Junior to give you an idea) the Seniors are somewhere in between 44.281 and 53.726
Hope this helps!
Carlos

Hi Randi,
Glad to hear we are going to have another Jr Chonda racer. If your son is 12 I would think he would be in the 320lb 12-15 year old Chonda Junior III class.
Like Carlos said most Chonda drivers start racing when they are in the mid to low 50 second lap times. The more seat time they get the more their driving & lap times improve. The Junior drivers are on the track at the same time as the Senior drivers but as soon as we get enough Juniors they can be on the track by themselves.
Take him to the track for a few practice sessions so he can get some more seat time & I am sure he will up to speed soon. It just takes practice to get up to speed.

Thanks Yanni. We will be there soon. He is turning about 1 minute laps now. (only 3 days at the track so far) It is the first four turns where he is so slow! ?? I have no idea. He has gone off track in turn 7 a couple of times, no big deal.
I don't know if its because from the kart it looks like the ground drops off or what.
